“Why would I order a camera part online when I can get out into the world and take photos on my way to the store? Why would I not want that experience?”
These are the words of London born NYC/ Sydney advertising photographer Simon Harsent, who chatted to me a few weeks ago about his work, his ethos and the business.
Simon takes his camera with him everywhere, and is constantly making images, between paid gigs. And he also has a more serious in depth personal project in development – always.
Apart from being his number 1 marketing tool, it’s also showing the world that he’s passionate about what he does and he’s going to do it whether or not he’s paid.
And that, Team, is one of the main reasons he’s a highly successful advertising photographer with a rich career behind (and ahead of) him.
If you’ve been following me for a while you’ll know I’m obsessed with the importance of making personal work.
Whether you wander out the door with your camera on your way to the shop, or you plan and develop a project that takes you down paths you never knew existed.
It’s all valid, because it’s how you see the world.
And those elusive creative decision makers want to see how you see the world.
You’ve got nothing to lose.
